DirtyLaundryDick’s Look at Some People…
DirtyLaundryDick Howdy! I’m the DirtyLaundryDick and I’m taking a moment to vent about this most particularly annoying display of some people’s insatiable greed. I’m an avid Freecycler and love the idea of being able to give something away to someone who might find another use for it. I also love stumbling across some object that I might be able to find another use for once the original owner decides its time for it to disappear. But I feel in my particular area, Freecyclers have grown out of control in their wants, needs and desires. A constant barrage of wanted posts for items that make me think “are you seriously asking for a free laptop computer, because everyone has one of those to cough up for your greedy begging ass!”
This weekend we had a yard sale, a house cleaning to get rid of our extra stuff before we move 1800 miles across the country. I’ve detached from this stuff but in order to help pay for SOME gas to get across the country, I would like a little bit of cash for my stuff. I’m not asking for a lot and even enticed people to “make me a deal I couldn’t refuse”. You want that 27″ TV for $25 instead of the $45 I’m asking? Okay, let’s make a deal. But if I had a frieken buck for every person that came to my yard sale and had the audacity to spend $2 and then ask if they could have a piece of furniture for free, I’d be a rich Dick today!
Then comes the end of yard sale day and I end up with a little under half the stuff that we started off with. Some of it I will post on Craigslist for a few bucks. The rest I will pass on for free to someone who might have a NEED for it. I’m not talking about the greedy bastard and bitch spending $2 and wanting a room of furniture thrown in. I’m talking about the single mom who might need some extra dishware or toys for her kids because she’s working 55 hours a week to support her family or the retired person living down the street who can put something to use. I posted a pile of stuff on the street, told people to pick out the things they’d like and away it would go.
Apparently one greedy bastard took most of the pile in one swoop, loading up his pickup truck as if he were a tried and true Clampett heading toward Beverly Hills. Then there were the greedy neighborhood kids who disbanded with several boxes of stuff that will never see a use beyond probably getting thrown out in another day once their parents find the junk. Lastly, how about the family that let themselves into my completely walled yard, pawed through boxes sitting on my porch and began picking things out that they had no frieken right to. They also had the insane audacity to knock on my door and ask where all the rest of the free stuff was.
People slay me. I turned into a Dick today because of pure greed. I’m a normally happy, friendly person. I only wish people could be more like my best customers this a weekend. A retired school teacher who actually asked to pay more for certain items because she knew how much I was going to half to fork out to move. Do you know what she was doing with the things she bought? She’s going to pass them onto school kids she knows needs some things like a bike, to get themselves back and forth to school. She’s the opposite of these greedy, free-mongering bastards and more people should strive to be more like her.

Hats-off to you for giving away stuff for free. Some people might take advantage of that and whether we like it or not, some people are just greedy.

I hear you. We had a CHARITY yard sale and people were stealing stuff and wanting the prices slashed in the first hour of the sale. The worst was at a sale I attended and a customer of the yard sale told the homeowner that he was a flea market dealer so couldn’t pay their price. (!)
God Bless your favorite customer. Even if she didn’t want to pay more than the asking price.

I’m a Freecycler too, and I know exactly what you mean. Some other peeves:
-People who only ever post “wanteds.” If I post a wanted I always post an offer at the same time.
-People that never show up to get their FREE stuff.
-When people respond to an offer I’ve posted with a sob story. I never give anything to someone that tells me I should pick them because they’re single or broke or have kids. I’m probably broker than they are.
A couple years ago we had a flood, and our car didn’t work right afterward. We bought an old station wagon to replace it, and decided to Freecycle the other one. The people that picked it up never got it registered or titled. I found this out when I received a notice that I was being fined a large sum of money because “my” car had been impounded after being involved in a drug altercation.
Next time it goes to the Salvation Army.
I just can’t get into the Freecycle here in my area. It seems that many of the posters feel that they are owed whatever it is they are asking for.
I love Craigslist though. Everyone benefits. I get a few bucks and you get a usable printer, bookshelf, etc.

The only Dicks I see are the ones pawing through your stuff and taking more than their fare share. You are just sweet.
I understand where you’re coming from. I’m seriously appalled by people who are trashy enough to demand free stuff and take more than they need. It makes me ashamed to be a fellow human. On the other hand, big time kudos to the teacher at your yard sale. I’m so inspired by people like her, making a difference in the world with one small kind gesture at a time. That truly saves us from being complete animals.

Some people just suck and have no scruples or class. This is why a lot of people are reluctant to be generous. There’s always at least one asshole that makes you question why you even bother to try. You’re generosity will come back to you. In the meantime, blog about the lousy greedy bastards of the world.
