Before you run out and adopt a pet let me ask you a few questions! First, how is your own personal hygiene? Is your breath rank? Do you wear deodorant? How often to you shave and comb your hair? Can you wipe your own ass?

I ask these questions because when you take on a pet it is your job to keep them clean, safe and to house train them. If you yourself are not house trained or perhaps you are just smelly you probably wont make a good pet owner.

How are your cleaning skills? How often do you scrub your toilet or wash your shower curtain? Are the clothes you are wearing clean? Do your socks match?

If you can’t clean up after yourself you will suck at cleaning up after an animal! Trust me it is much harder to keep your home clean with pets than it is to keep it clean with only you residing there! Not everyone is a capable pet owner!

Plus, pets like order and cleanliness just like people do! If they are forced to live in tight cluttered conditions they will act out and ruin your home!

Honestly some people are just not capable pet owners because they can’t even take care of themselves. Yesterday while answering some Craigslist ads we ended up at a home that was overrun with pets (we’ll call this RaunchyPetHome)!

We are talking 4 large dogs confined to the porch to pee and poo everywhere, 1 indoor cat that had to sleep on and do her business on piles of her peoples cluttered crap, much like the displayed photo.

The inside of the home smelled of rotten OLD feces, with that much clutter the cat probably couldn’t find the litter box and her owners wouldn’t know if she crapped on the floor, cause well, where is the floor?

The porch smelled of dog piss and the landscaping smelled of cat spray and feces as a result of the 20+ unfixed, feral cats they having living under their home! Not only is this situation unsuitable for the pets living there but it is also bad for your health and the health of your pets, plus your home is being destroyed!

These well meaning people were all, have a seat and we can hang out for a while. Yeah right! We were trying NOT to touch ANYTHING while we were there, we didn’t want to get sick. The only thing we touched was the poor animals that were just dying for attention.

Folks, believe it or not, your cleaning habits and hygiene do play into what kind of pet owner you will be! If you horde crap and have an over cluttered home you need to deal with it before adding more residents to the mix. Also, before you get a pet try keeping your home spotless for several consecutive months, then try keeping a plant alive for a year… If you succeed at both these tests getting a single pet might be okay.

If you think your hygiene and cleaning skills are up to par and you do decide to get a pet heed this advice: Only get one at a time and fix them all! Pets that are not fixed will breed, spray and have the tendency to destroy your home more that fixed animals will.

Plus uncontrolled animal breeding is usually how so many people get overwhelmed and then deemed “animal horders”. Fix your animals and keep your home clean guys!
